I’ve been avidly scouring the recent New York Fashion Week runways and one recurring beauty trend that’s really captured my heart is the deep, wine-stained lip as seen at Vera Wang, Alice + Olivia, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Zac Posen. These bold kissers are deadringers for the ’90s grunge era a la Kurt Cobain days, and will be BIG for Autumn/Winter ’13.
Call the colour what you will – burgundy, ox blood, merlot, plum – it’s only fair that you learn how to perfect this just-bitten style so you can be bang-on-trend in the seasons to come. And it’s quite simple; don a dark matte lip, pair with luminous satin skin, groomed eyebrows and a few lashing of mascara and you’re good to go! Here’s how to rock the rouge:
Step 1 – Prep your Lips
The key to a perfect pout always starts with a good base. To exfoliate your kissers, dampen a toothbrush and gently slough away at any dry skin in a circular motion for about 30 seconds before rinsing them with lukewarm water. This stimulates circulation so lips appear plumper. Pat lips dry then smooth on a nourishing, reparative lip balm. I’m in love with By Terry Or De Rose Baume Precieux as it leaves behind a baby soft surface thanks to Vitamin E and e 24-Carat Pink Gold. Wait at least one minute for the formula to fully absorb. Then, blot your lips with a tissue until the lips feel hydrated but no longer slick.
Step 2 – Apply a powder, concealer or foundation
To make your lipstick shade look bolder, prevent the colour from bleeding and provide a base that helps the formula to last, dab on a little bit of translucent powder, concealer or foundation to your lips.
Step 3 – Line your pout
Start at the perimeter of your lip line and, using light, feathery strokes, bleed a lip liner which matches your lipstick inward toward the center of your lips. This allows you to blend the colour as you apply it. Try Stila Glaze Lip Liner in Plum.
Step 3 – Swipe on your lipstick
Time for the grand finale! Carefully line your mouth with your chosen dark lippie. I’m obsessed with Dolce & Gabana Shine Lipstick in Plum as it offers tons of volume and pigment but won’t kiss off a hot second later. When applying, the closer you stay to the edge of your lips, the bigger they will appear.
Step 4 – Add a Clear Gloss
For an extra pop, add a clear gloss to the middle of your lips if you want a little bit of shine and oomph.
And there you have it – the perfect Autumn/Winter pout!
