5 to try fake tanNo one can argue with the innate appeal of a (safe) sun-kissed glow. And just because summer has come to an end, doesn’t mean your tan has to go with it. Ward off wintry weather blahs with a stellar faux glow, easily achievable with a few of my favourite fake bake products from Fresh. Welcome to the bronze age.

1. Fake Bake Bronzing Gel, $32

First up, let’s talk gel tanners. Whenever my skin is in dire need of some moisture, I’ll reach for my gel formulas. This particular bad boy is great for producing a warm, radiant, sun-kissed glow that’s utterly natural-looking as opposed to Oompah-Loompah-like. Once applied, you can actually see where the tan is for fool-proof results and your skin feels oh-so-soft and smooth afterwards. Alongside this, the texture is non sticky and contains nourishing antioxidants like Vitamin C and E that help to combat free radicals. As for longevity of the colour, it lasts! Just be sure to exfoliate beforehand to avoid streaking.

2. Christian Dior Bronze Self-Tanning Oil Natural Glow, $61

I’m all for luxurious beauty products and this definitely fits the category. Containing a silky oil based formula which feels absolutely divine, rest assured this bronze accelerator will impart a lasting glow and transform the skin into supple, illuminated, flawless perfection. The oil dries instantly so there’s no greasy residue left behind and one application looks so fabulous, you might as well have spent a week in the tropics. Expect your radiance to last for up to four days, and reapply as needed. Major highlight: the floral scent!

3. Xen Tan Mousse Intense: Weekly Self-Tan, $40

A surefire glow-getter, this lightweight mouse is pretty much my tanning staple all year round. Boasting a creamy formula that rapidly dissolves and dries upon contact with the skin, there’s nothing I don’t love about this glammifier. You can use it on your body and your face, and it won’t make your visage look parched. Bonus. The colour is sheer, so you can get away with fauxing your glow during the work week and apply another layer for the weekend to take things up a notch. Best part? It’s paraben-free and oil-free. Double bonus.

4. Jane Iredale Tantasia Self Tanner, $48

This hydrating self-tanner gives you an instant hint of color, then deepens a full shade darker within three days by working with your skin’s chemistry to create a natural looking tan. The time-release formula is streak-free and long-lasting and exudes a crisp and fresh citrusy scent. Quicker than a gradual tanner and not as intense as an instant bronzer. Total no-brainer.

5. La Prairie Gradual Tanning Lotion For Face and Body, $103

The creme de la creme of tanning prods, this gradual glow-getter imparts developing radiance that you can’t mess up, that won’t transfer onto clothes, and looks perfectly natural and gorgeous. The formula is weightless and non-greasy and contains Shea Butter which helps to soften and relieve the skin oh-so-delicately. No typical tanning smell here – the fragrance is invigorating and fresh!

Tanning Do’s & Don’ts

Do: Exfoliate your body to slough away dead skin cells and create a smooth surface before applying your tanner.

Don’t: Wear deodorant, perfume, or essential oils; they can interfere with the tanning process and cause splotching.

Do: Hydrate your skin with a water-based moisturiser to help absorb the tanning product, and then apply self-tanner using gloves or a tanning mitt.

Don’t: Put on any tight clothing on afterwards that will create indents or streaking and ruin all of your handiwork.

Do: Keep a dry wash cloth handy so you can buff areas—like the elbows, knees, and ankles—that grab too much product.
