cara

I’m simply besotted by British model Cara Delevingne at last week’s Cannes Film Festival 2013 red carpet. The runway starlet embraced the evening’s vintage theme with a daring black lace Burberry number teamed with dazzling jewels and flawless make-up.

Not many people can pull of lips, tips, brows and a smoky eye, but this beauty pulled it off with ultimate style. Hats off to you, Cara!

Learn how to get her awe-inspiring look below:

GET THE LOOK

STEP ONE: Get a radiant canvas by prepping your skin with Glamglow’s Tingling & Exfoliating Mud Mask (celebrities go crazy for this stuff, especially before red carpet appearances!).

STEP TWO: Mix equal parts of Yves St Laurent Le Teint Touche Eclat Illuminating Foundation with NARS Illuminator in Copacabana and then apply to your face using a makeup sponge or Kevyn Aucoin Super Soft Buff Powder Brush. Blend outwards towards the hairline. Dab some concealer under your eye area to disguise dark circles if needed.

STEP THREE: Add a touch of soft, just-pinched colour to your cheeks with Jane Iredale PurePressed Blush. Apply lightly onto the upper part of your cheekbones and dab outwards and upwards until fully blended.

STEP FOUR: Achieve the model’s smouldering smokey eye make-up with a hint of iridescent silver sparkle at the inner corners of the eyes thanks to RMK’s Ingenious Powder Eye. This will help bring out the brightness in your peepers. Complement this by lining the eyes with a gel liner and then add a few dustings of Pixi Smoky Eye Wand on the outer corners of the eye.

STEP FIVE: Apply mascara to the upper and lower lashes with a lengthening formula like Sisley Phyto Mascara Ultra Stretch.

STEP SIX: Get Cara’s famous eyebrows by brushing them upwards with a tinted brow gel such as GloMinerals GloBrow Gel.

STEP SEVEN: Finish with a dark, sensuous red lip with Lancome La Laque Fever Lipshine in #104 Simply Red and pucker up.

Don’t forget to leave your tresses loosely teased and tumbled for a take on the more sophisticated blow-wave.

Now you’re ready to shut the whole red carpet down!

I get it. Creating the perfect skincare routine for yourself can be a battle and a half, particularly with so many product options out there. Does the moisturiser or the serum go on first? Do I really need an eye cream? Does toner even do anything? Why do I need a cleanser when I can just use wipes? Yup, the very thought can be overwhelming.

But don’t fret, this easy peasy video that I’ve compiled for all you beauty mavens will take you step by step through the process of a perfect skincare routine so you can emerge each night with a flawless, glowing canvas. Press play to achieve clear skin nirvana!

skincare steps

SKINCARE STEPS

Step 1: Remove your makeup with wipes or a gentle makeup removing formula.

Product used in video: Bare Escentuals i.d. Take Off Facial Wipes, $19

Step 2: Apply cleanser to remove the residue of the wipes and get rid of daily grime, makeup, dead skin cells, and oxidised sebum. Build into a lather before rinsing off and then pat dry with a soft towel or cloth. Choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a clear cleanser if you have oily skin.

Product used in video: Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser, $47

Step 3: To remove any leftover traces of dirt, add a little bit of toner to some cotton pads and wipe gently across your face before rinsing. Pat dry.

Product used in video: Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Gentle Hydrating Toner, $27

Step 4: Apply an antioxidant-infused serum to the skin and let it soak in for five minutes.

Product used in video: Perricone MD Chia Serum, $97

Step 5: Massage a dollop of moisturiser into your visage once the serum has fully absorbed.

Product used in video: La Mer Creme De La Mer, $251

Step 6: Dab eye cream around the orbital socket of the eyes and pat it into the skin until fully blended. Don’t rub as this can damage the delicate skin around the eye area.

Product used in video: Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream, $67

EXTRA STEPS: Exfoliate once or twice per week on clean skin and apply a purifying or hydrating mask once per week on evenings that you don’t exfoliate.

gitIt was soooooo hard to choose through the vast array of amazing entries from all of you lovely ladies in our Mother’s Day giveaway, but after hemming and hawwing over some standout favourites, I’m happy to announce that the wonderful winner of the Lancome Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector is Kerry Santillo for her clever (and oh-so-true) entry about mum’s best beauty advice:

Never leave the house without a lipstick. Not only is it key to making any outfit look instantly polished and put-together, but it also moonlights as the perfect blush (or rouge as Mum likes to call it).

Congrats Kerry! Please email kristina@fragrancesandcosmetics.com.au to claim your prize.

And a huge thanks to everyone else for taking the time to submit your entries. They were a pleasure to read.

Here are some other awesome mum-inspired answers full of incredible tips, tricks and beauty mantras:

MUM’S BEST BEAUTY ADVICE

“My grandmother was my best friend, and the one who gave me beauty advice: she said oatmeal sewn into a muslin bag was perfect for a bath soak, but she also said to use it as a scrubbing pad to keep hands and face soft and white. Everyone knows how good an oatmeal bath is for sensitive and painful skin, but the new trend is muslin face cloths for exfoliation and cleansing! My grandmother was way ahead of her time, I miss her every day.” — Kristine

“Mum always said Beauty comes from within
Not just on your outer skin
Always said Walk and Stand Proud with a smile
And your Inner Beauty will take style.” — Nichole Mckee

“Mum always told me to put a cold compress on my face to soothe acne and inflammation  I’d dampen it, put it over sliced cucumbers so the antioxidants were infused in the material and then leave it in the freezer for an hour before gently applying it to my face. Strangely worked wonders!” — Chiara Lee

“My Mum taught me that when you have a great life full of fun, you’ll probably have to spend a lot on skincare to take care of the laughter lines…but it’s worth every cent!” — Glenda McDonnell

“Winter, with socks & stockings, always dries out my heels but Mum told me to moisturise (heavily), straight after my shower then put on my bed socks  … the heat, moisturiser & fluffy socks means no cracked heels come summer sandals.” — Sue Bou

“My mother always said that Tea Tree Oil would clear up any skin problem, acne, pimples, blemishes and dry skin. It really did work.” — Michelle Green

“Stay out of the sun, it’s really simple but it’s the best anti-ageing tool there is out there.” — Anna

“Always smile, it is the best make-up a girl can have. Have you ever seen a smiling face that was not beautiful?” — Johanna Rees

“The best beauty advice that my mother gave me is to clean my skin with Rose Water. It’s cheap, you can buy it in any supermarket, cleans, tones and refresh your skin like no other! Use it everyday.” — Marta

“My mum tells me that I don’t need lots of makeup to look beautiful. What makes me beautiful is from the inside.” — Ina J

“An eyebrow pencil is your best friend. A nice shaped brow frames your best feature – your eyes.” — Leila

“Mum told me to always try to be positive, kind and happy on the inside – as being a happy and caring person always makes you look beautiful, no matter what your age.” — Margaret Chafer

“The best thing you can put on your face is a smile and sunscreen – every day of the year.” — Tracey Pinny

“BEAUTY is power; but the best MAKEUP any woman can wear is a SMILE. And, the best ACCESSORY a woman can own is CONFIDENCE; it brings out the GODDESS, and makes any woman SHINE from within!” — Renata

“My mother always told me that ‘Beauty is when you radiate happiness’ and so you should always wear makeup that makes you feel happy, confident and beautiful because you will radiate it outwards as well, and it will change your perceptive on everything.” — Una Chen

“My Mum taught me to use lemons for their bleaching effect – for the dark skin on your elbows, on freckles and sunspots on your face, – add lemon in your hair and the sun will give you that bleached sunkissed look.” — Pernilla S

“My mum always told me if I want to keep wrinkles at bay invest in a great toner, eye cream and moisturiser with SPF.” — Nicole Latham

“Green toned concealer for red blemishes and salmon toned concealer for dark under-eye circles!” — Sophie

“My mum is nuts. Some of her advice: smearing honey on cold-sores, rubbing acne with a fresh cut potato, mashed banana face-mask, exfoliating with sugar… if she was coming at me with food I wasn’t sure if I’d be eating or wearing it!” — Bibi

“Always use moisturiser and sunscreen on the back of your hands.” — Sarah

“My mother taught me not to squeeze pimples instead steam face and put a hot face cloth on it to bring it to a head and then apply toothpaste to dry it out.” — Melanie Scott

Beauty Without Botox: How to fake looking like you’ve just had a face lift

gwenythbeautywithoutbotox

It seems like every woman’s greatest fear is to look gasp, her actual age. But fighting the hands of time doesn’t have to be about hating the changes your skin and body are undergoing. Rather, the aging process should be about embracing and enhancing your best bits without the need for invasive surgery or needles. After all, ageless beauty is about feeling good in your skin, right?

This particular mentality is starting to be adopted by some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers. Gwenyth Paltrow recently announced she was giving up botox in favour of more natural beauty processes. Similarly, Nicole Kidman is also taking the no-needle pledge.

According to The Age, the big skincare shift is toward preservation and nourishment as opposed to the ‘burn baby burn’ approach of previous decades. Beauty gurus are now touting the benefits of investing in good skincare products from an early age that come turbo charged with active ingredients like peptides, stem cells and antioxidants as opposed to being frozen-into-oblivion or having to go under the knife.

In light of this, read ahead to learn how you can get similar youth-boosting effects with less invasive tactics. From correcting crow’s feet to covering pigmentation and wrinkles, consider this the ultimate anti-aging bible!

fine lines

ISSUE: FINE LINES AND WRINKLES

As we age, the skin begins to lose its elasticity due to dehydration and the constant contracting of facial muscles. Sun damage can also contribute to creating pronounced creases in the skin. Your eyes, mouth and forehead are often the most common areas to cop it.

CURE:  When it comes to warding away wrinkles, it’s important to stimulate the formation of new collagen and hyaluronic acid (a natural sugar in the skin that attracts and binds water, keeping it soft, smooth and firm) with the right products. A hydrating day cream with plumping properties such as peptides and silicone derivatives will provide instant gratification to the skin by filling in lines and crevices. Serums and treatment masques infused with antioxidants are equally as important in helping to rebuild the skin while protecting it against future damage. Finally, a night cream containing retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, will stimulate circulation and increase cell growth, which speeds up the skin’s regeneration process and ultimately its metabolism. Because retinoids can be irritating, first timers should prep skin for 2 weeks with an antioxidant such as coffeeberry or green tea.

SHOP IT: 1. Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Super Cream, $42, 2. Prevage Anti-Aging Intensive Repair Daily Serum, $261, 3. SK-II Stempower Rich Cream, $232, 4. Priori CoffeeBerry Day Complex, $105

sunscreen

ISSUE: SUN DAMAGE

Most of the UV rays that bombard us on a daily basis are UVA, which penetrates deeply into the skin and ravages collagen, thus producing age spots, wrinkles and dry areas.

CURE: The one product that will help stave off the years is a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The skin has an incredible ability to heal itself once you start blocking UVA and UVB rays and you’ll see an improvement in both texture and tone. To boost protection, choose a sunscreen or an additional topical product that contains antioxidants such as green tea, pomegranate, and vitamins C and E. Research shows that these supercharged products offer extra insurance against the onslaught of UV-produced free radicals

SHOP IT: 1. Peter Thomas Roth Sheer Liquid SPF 50 Anti-Aging Sunscreen, $67, 2. John Masters Organics Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, $51, 3. Orlane Extreme Anti-Wrinkle Care Sunscreen SPF 30, $213, 4. Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Day Cream Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30, $70

lips1

ISSUE: AGING LIPS

Over time the area on and around our lips begins to lose its youthful convexity. Fine lines, sagging, loss of volume, thinning and pigmentation begin to appear and lack of moisture and suppleness is evident.

CURE: It’s important to employ a daily ritual to help rejuvenate the lip’s vitality. Look for products that contain hydrators like shea butter and sunflower oil or antioxidants like rosehip. To disguise lost collagen and lip thinning, enlist the help of a treatment that contains hyaluronic acid fillers which help boost volume beneath the skin’s surface to smooth the lips and the surrounding areas. Products that lift and tighten the kissers, while providing the perfect surface for lipstick are also imperative.

SHOP IT: 1. La Prairie Cellular Lip Line Plumper, $112, 2. Swissline Cell Shock Cellular Lip Zone Corrective Complex, $98, 3. Bloom Organics Soothing Lip Balm – Beeswax & Shea Butter, $18, 4. Once Upon A Time Anti-Wrinkle Plumping-Smoothing Lip Balm, $20

sagging

ISSUE: SAGGING SKIN

Ageing causes a decrease in the production of collagen and elastin, as well as the amount of natural moisture, leading to a loss of firmness and elasticity which in turn produces a sagging effect.

CURE: Your focus should mainly be on rebuilding the skin so look for products that contain retinol (vitamin A) or hydroquinone, as well as antixoidants like Vitamin C and coenzyme Q10. You can also replenish your skin with products containing lactic acid for hydration.

SHOP IT: 1. Cellex-C Formulations Advanced-C Skin Tightening Cream, $164, 2. Adrien Arpel Cellular PPRX, $49, 3. Dr. Brandt Time Arrest Cream, $125, 4. Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Age-Correcting Creme, $354

pigmentation

ISSUE: PIGMENTATION

Sunlight, environmental factors and the natural passage of time all contribute to the development of dark spots, skin pigmentation and uneven skin tone. There’s also emotional stress and hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause to contend with.

CURE: Key ingredients to consider when trying to control hyperpigmentation are Vitamin C and hydroquinone which improve irregularities and the appearance of  dark spots, while evening out the skin tone. Similarly, retinol-based products makes the skin smoother, firmer, and more even-toned. Exfoliation is also pivotal to the facial rejuvenation process. It increases dermal volume, making skin look less wrinkly and uneven and will also help fade brown spots and redness. A scrub or a chemical exfoliant, such as a glycolic peel or a lactic-acid cleanser are great at curing the effects of age-induced pigmentation.

SHOP IT: 1. Jan Marini Age Intervention Enlighten Plus, $136, 2. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, $82, 3. Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser, $47, 4. EmerginC Complexion Perfection, $109

eyes1

ISSUE: UNDER EYE BAGS

It’s normal for eyes to bag slightly due to decreased elasticity of the skin as you age. Stray blood cells leak out of under-eye vessels, potentially causing the area beneath to darken and appear bruised.

CURE: Eye creams or serums containing retinol can help thicken the thin skin under the eyes, making it look less transparent. Anti-aging eye cream products containing vitamin K will also help dark circles fade. It’s also important to boost the  circulation underneath your eyes to brighten the area and reduce puffiness. Try an eye cream with a metal applicator to help this process. Also, don’t ever underestimate the power of a good concealer! Start by putting on eye cream—concealer can settle into fine lines of all skin types, especially drier complexions. Then apply a generous layer of concealer from the inner corner of the eye around to the outer corner with a concealer brush. Pat and press the product into the skin to blend. If there’s still any darkness visible, apply a second layer of concealer. Set the concealer with a dusting of face powder that matches your foundation.

SHOP IT: 1. Dr. Dennis Gross Lift & Lighten Eye Cream, $79, 2. Olay Rejuvenating Eye Roller, $33, 3. Jouer Age Repairing Concealer, $34, 4. Eve Lom Eye Lift, $112

crows feet

ISSUE: CROW’S FEET

The lack of a fatty tissue layer is what causes crow’s feet around the eyes to become visible. Eventually, the fatty tissue layer is lost or becomes thinner as time progresses, hence how creases start to appear. Constant muscle contraction from smiling or squinting as well free radicals and UV exposure can damage cellular DNA and lead to eye crevices.

CURE: Amino acids called hexapeptides can block the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract around the eyes, as they work on the same principle as Botox. When applied, the ingredients subtly inhibit muscle movements to soften wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming around the blinkers. The ingredient retinol also helps to tighten and smooth out smile lines.

SHOP IT: 1. Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Eye Serum, $315, 2. Pevonia Evolutive Eye Cream, $81, 3. SK-II Wrinkle Specialist, $190, 4. Guinot Hydrazone Eye Contour Serum Cream, $58

brow

ISSUE: AGING EYEBROWS

Like your skin and hair, your brows can start to show their age. They can thin out, become coarse and unruly, or turn gray.

CURE: Just as a new hairstyle can trim away the years, a well-groomed, well-defined brow can lend your face a years-younger look. Use a brow powder to fill in patchy spots and make your arches look thicker or lengthen your brow tails with a pencil. If your brows are mostly gray, dyeing them is the best fix. Ask your stylist if your salon offers the service (it’s often free when you get your hair coloured).

SHOP IT: 1. Laura Mercier Eye Brow Groomer Brush, $19, 2. Jane Iredale Super Shape Me Eyebrow Kit, $88, 3. Lashem Measurable Difference Eyelash & Brow Enhancing Serum, $86, 4. Shiseido Natural Eyebrow Pencil, $31

PRO TIP: Your skin reflects what you eat. Chemicals and processed foods are toxic to your cells and cause degeneration, making you look older. Your skin is an eliminating organ, and if you’ve got a poor diet or are dehydrated, your complexion will show it. Plenty of fresh fruit, veggies and water will help alleviate dull skin and the overall aging process.

MBFWA: Skin-prepping backstage with La Roche-Posay

Jesse O'BrienEvery pristine makeup look starts with beautifully prepped skin. But imagine reapplying makeup and removing it, up to three times in one day, and then repeating that, every day for a week. Skin sensitivity may not be an issue at the beginning of fashion week but for many, it certainly will be by the end!

La Roche-Posay perfectly timed its launch of Rosaliac AR Intense, a new skin solution to calm and soothe irritated skin and redness, and previewed it at Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week yesterday for the Christopher Esber show.

Nadine Monley, skin care director for La Roche-Posay explains her method to a flawless makeup base:

1

Step One: La Roche-Posay Eye Makeup Remover

Models coming from other shows had on a face full of makeup. The first step was to remove the makeup from the eye gently, using La Roche-Posay’s renowned Eye Makeup Remover. I soaked some eye pads in this beautiful product and gently placed it on the eye. After a few seconds, I removed the eye pad and most of the makeup was gone from round the eyes.  The gentle formula is ideal for people who wear contact lens, have sensitive skin/eyes who are travelling – the individual ampules are ideal!

2

Step Two: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser

Anyone seeking a gentle cleanse needs to try this one. I started with the Dermo Cleanser and gently massaged it into the model’s skin. I left it to absorb for a few minutes. It’s so light and soothing that it  leaves the skin feeling fresh and revitalized. I believe that beautiful skin comes from-and deserves- the purest formulas. La Roche-Posay does all this and more! The beautiful and light consistency and soothing properties cleanse and nourish the skin, you can even leave it on.

3

Step Three: La Roche-Posay Thermal Water

My secret weapon. I sprayed a light mist of Thermal Springwater (or you can try our Creme Hydreane Legere Creme Hydratante which is just as fabulous) on the model’s face and décolletage to complete the cleansing regime. I sprayed it twice on the model’s skin and left it to absorb for a minute or so. I wanted the skin looking fresh by replenishing and putting moisture into the skin from Thermal water that has antioxidant and balancing properties from a high concentration of selenium. Skin loves selenium.

4

Step Four: La Roche-Posay Rosaliac Intense

Ok, this was my other secret weapon! The Rosaliac Intense formula features an efficient anti-redness action. It reduces redness, soothes and hydrates irritated skin and therefore perfect for model’s whose skin is overstimulated and aggravated from having make up applied and removed frequently. I gently applied small amounts of this moisturiser to finish off.

Review: La Mer Creme de La Mer – the mother of all moisturisers

My Crème de la Mer - La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream

Finding the end-all, be-all lotion has always been my ultimate conquest, particularly working in an industry where I’m surrounded daily by an influx of new products. And I’ll admit, some of my recent daily moisturisers haven’t been up to snuff. Sure, the jars have promised healthier looking skin, but they’re yet to deliver that celeb-endorsed glow.

So here’s the thing: When I find something I love, it’s hard not to tell the world about it. Which is why you’re reading this little beauty rant today about the current love of my life: La Mer Creme de La Mer, a beyond-effective skin saviour that’s delivering results almost immediately to my mug. What kind of results, you ask? A brighter complexion, divinely nourished skin, and the near-disappearance of dry patches, for starters. Not too shabby.

This cult fave among celebs like Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Ora, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna, Scottie Disick (aka Lord Disick, bitch from the Kardashian clan) has truly fulfilled its magical reputation and brought my otherwise lacklustre complexion back to life. Alas, there’s proof! Click here.

The product comes with an interesting little back story. It was created yonks ago by Max Huber, an aerospace physicist whose face was scarred from a chemical experiment gone awry, and as mentioned it now has a cult following among consumers and celebrities thanks to its soothing, healing, and restorative properties (not to mention the $2,672 price tag on some of the products in the range!). As Blake Lively once told Allure magazine, “It’s extravagant, but it’s the best”. And no, I don’t think she was paid to say that.

Let’s break it down even further…

WHAT IS IT:

A rich moisturising cream  that helps heal dry, sensitive skin and renew its appearance. The blend of nutrients nourish the skin and encourage its natural repair process.

WHAT IT DOES:

Using a medley of sea kelp and vitamins, the extremely rich cream provides long-lasting and deep-penetrating hydration while fighting free radicals and keeping the hands of time at bay.

KEY INGREDIENTS:

Miracle Broth, a blend of sea kelp, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, lecithin, vitamins C, E and B12, in addition to citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower oils. These ingredients help hydrate, renew and soothe irritation.

HOW IT FEELS/SMELLS/LOOKS:

A buttery, creamy texture with a very lightly refreshing botanical scent that leaves skin feeling fresh and hydrated and positively glowing without being weighed down. Comes with a small spatula so you can dole out just the right amount of product without overusing it. No greasy residue here.

WHY I’M FREAKING OBSESSED:

I know this sounds crazy, but I noticed a difference after only four days of use. The surface of my skin was noticeably smoother and perhaps it was wishful thinking, but I did think my skin looked tighter and really glowy. The thick-as-butter formula delivers unbeatable hydration to any skin type – be it dry or mature – although I think it might be too rich for oily types. Nevertheless, all those narky dry patches around my foreheads and subtle breakouts around my chin disappeared within days, leaving my visage soft, youthful and looking totally lit-from-within.

TRY IT IF:

You’re looking for a quick, easy, one-step solution for moisture, fine lines, dullness, discolouration, and even skin tone. Most notably, if you’ve ever dealt with dry skin (and who hasn’t?), then this is definitely worth trying. It can also be used as a super hydrating primer. Simply smooth it on and allow it to absorb before you apply your base. Your makeup will glide on like velvet.

THE VERDICT:

If you can swing the high price tag, it’s worth every penny. Honest. Plus, word has it that this formula lasts for ages. It really can’t get any better than that now, can it?

PRO TIP: Always moisturise down to your decolletage.

mature age

Q: “Hi Kristina,

Here’s a question. Can you do a post on doing eye make up for older eyes? My mother has expressed that she’s struggling to work out how to do make-up and what types and colours to wear now that she’s older. Metallics don’t generally look as good, so are there some good matte shadow palettes she could look into? What kind of priming should be done to avoid makeup falling into the creases? Are there any make up techniques she could try to make her eyes look more youthful, beyond just using eye cream?

Thanks,

Ellen”

A: Hi Ellen!

Great question! When it comes to makeup for mature aged eyes, the first rule is to make sure the skin around this area is in tip-top condition so the wrinkles and crow’s feet look less pronounced. For a fast fix, a hydrating eye cream which contains retinol (try Clinicians Complex Retinol Eye Cream) will plump up the skin and smooth lines while a serum containing peptides such as Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum will help to rebuild the surface and protect it against future damage. But the best time-fighitng tool which helps to significantly reduce dark circles, puffiness and boost circulation is to massage the area each night with an eye cream that contains a metal applicator like Givenchy No Surgetics Plasti Sculpt Lifting Gel Eye De Puffer.

Next step is applying an eyelid primer which will prevent the the eyeshadow from creasing and fading, increase the longevity of the makeup and also correct discolouration on the lids.

When it comes to selecting an eye shade and formula, it’s best to stay away from textures that are too bright, metallic, glittery or wet as they exaggerate fine lines. Matte or satin textures in netural tones are most flattering. For matte, I recommend Christian Dior 5 Color Designer All In One Artistry Palette in No. 708 Amber Design and for a velvet satin finish, opt for Guerlain Ecrin 4 Couleurs Long Lasting Eyeshadow in #07 Les Cuirs or for a variation of colours, try Jane Iredale Perfectly Nude Eye Shadow Kit.

To make the eyes appear youthful and gorgeous, gently shade in the crease and the outer corner of the eye, blending slightly upwards to give an impression that the eye tilts up, reversing the downwards droop. This will also help to brighten the eyes and disguise weariness.

Lining the lashes also becomes increasingly important as we age. The use of a pencil or gel liner (preferably in brown as black can be too full on) will help to open the peepers right up. Steer clear of liquid liners as these do not sit well with skin creases.

If your mother’s eyes are round or are starting to droop, she can create lift by directing the eyeliner slightly upwards on the outer edges of the lash line, as opposed to following the natural shape when applying her makeup. If her inner rims are starting to redden, she can conceal this with a skin-toned eye pencil and follow with two coats of volumising mascara to help restore fullness to the lashes.  Focus on the base of the lash; don’t place a heavy load of mascara on the tips of the lashes or they’ll look clumpy and heavy.

Also, fuller, deeper brows give the appearance of an instant face-lift. Try a shadow or brow pencil that’s close to the hair colour to fill in the arches brows. If you’re using a powder, apply with a stiff angled brush pressing into the bare spots and blend with a spoolie brush or clean mascara wand.

Finally, avoid using foundation or powder on crow’s feet. Instead, distract from them by dabbing concealer only where needed — in the discoloured areas around the eyes and face. Lancome Long-Lasting Softening Concealer helps soften the look of undereye circles and visibly eliminates the signs of stress and fatigue, while making the eyes look well rested. Use a small, flat makeup brush to apply the concealer in the dark area and gently pat—don’t massage or rub—the concealer on the discoloured area. If you try to massage the concealer in, you’ll pull and stretch your eye area’s delicate skin.

So there you have it, simple ways of how your mother can camouflage the signs of aging around her stargazers. I’m sure that whichever look she decides to go for, it’ll be fabulous!

Here’s an alternate way of creating a sexy, smoky eye for mature blinkers.
